Monday night's game four loss is most likely the last meaningful home playoff game that will be played in the TD Garden for some time. The Celtics are old, there is no other way to put it and they really do not have many young building blocks to, well, build off of. Let's look at their roster. Rajon Rondo is their point guard and he will be the centerpiece for the Celtics in the future. But would the Celtics be open to trading Rondo? He is their most valuable asset and they could easily load up on high draft picks and/or get at least two very good players in return. I don't think this is the way to go because once you have a high caliber point guard in place, you keep them there like you would a quarterback.
At the shooting guard position, Ray Allen is past his prime, but he still knocks down shots, so I would not want to trade him either. Also, Delonte West is a good player, believe me, he can play. He is consistent and he is relatively young at the age of 27.
At the small forward position, the Celtics have an aging Pierce, but he is still a premier scorer and a big part of Celtics history and their team image. So was Larry Bird. The Celtics were set back for many years because they did not trade Larry Bird until he was too old and the Celtics had nowhere to go from there. As much as I love Paul Pierce, the Celtics need to trade him because that is how you build for the future. Professional sports is a business. The Celtics traded Kendrick Perkins who was cemented into the team chemistry of the Celtics but they traded him anyway. So Paul Pierce, as much as I love him, needs to be traded in the best interest of the Celtics because Jeff Green is nowhere near the scorer Pierce is.
Another player who has to be traded is Kevin Garnett. His career is winding down, but teams would still take him. I know the Celtics wouldn't get a whole lot, but they would surely get future draft picks. They also need to let go of Glen Davis, who to be honest is a fucking idiot, but he is an overachiever, I'll give him that. The Celtics also need to find a future center now that they have traded Kendrick Perkins.
In conclusion, the Celtics need to get rid of the "big three" image. That will not win them championships because once the Miami Heat close out the Celtics, the window has officially closed. The Celtics must build around Rajon Rondo, trade away one or two of the big three for future draft picks and I think if they really want to contend with Miami, Chicago and New York in the next few years, they need to trade Paul Pierce because he is their second most valuable asset after Rondo. But I don't think the Celtics will do this. They will try to get as much out of the big three as possible and they will not get past the first round, maybe the second round if they were to get lucky. There is no way they will trade Pierce, at least I don't think that would happen because it surely wouldn't be a popular decision. I don't know how, but the Celtics must start the reloading faze, not the rebuilding because I hate how teams don't try to win in the present but for the future because it rarely works, but the Celtics will start reloading to have a chance to contend with Miami, Chicago and New York in the coming years.
