What to do with the Number One Pick if you're the Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts certainly have a difficult decision that they will have to ponder and analyze for months until mid-April. The Colts will have the number one pick unless something crazy happens which means they will have the first opportunity to select Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck is as ready as it gets and compared to other quarterbacks who were hyped coming out of college, he looks as ready if not more than Matt Ryan and Peyton Manning and is certainly looks like he will be more promising than a Matt Lineart. So you can't pass up Luck, right? Well, the Colts could make the argument that you could. They still have Peyton Manning, one of the game's greatest. It looks as if he will return as healthy as he was and return to form. You can make the argument that the Colts should pass up on Andrew Luck and go after someone else. I understand the Colts have other problems on both sides of the ball, but here is why you can't pass up Andrew Luck if you are the Indianapolis Colts.
Andrew Luck is as ready and elite as they come coming out of college. You can't pass up on such talent. Adrian Peterson was the most talented player in the 2007 NFL Draft Class but he was passed up on because the teams drafting ahead of the Vikings didn't "need" a running back. Sometimes, you just have to add talent to your roster. The Colts must do this if they do not want to have a mediocre decade once the Peyton Manning era ends. Look at other great dynasties. After Steve Young, the 49ers went a whole decade before being relevant again this year. The Cowboys after Troy Aikman took a while to become a contender once again. The point is, a great quarterback can make you a contender instantly and it can keep you a contender for years. Andrew Luck would keep the Colts relevant for another decade at least.
I don't believe the Colts will make the right decision come April.
They will pass up on Andrew Luck and it won't hurt them
next year or a couple of years from now, but when
the Colts don't make the playoffs for a ten year stretch, they will
regret the decision to pass on Andrew Luck
Now, the one problem with drafting Andrew Luck is that it could mean that the Colts are showing Peyton Manning the door. I don't think so though. Why can't Luck sit as long as Manning is doing well? If Manning is doing well, than the Colts are probably doing well. Peyton isn't going to play forever. At the most I think he has three more great years left in him. Sitting for three years didn't have any effect on Aaron Rodgers now, did it. If Peyton Manning were to feel slighted or disrespected by drafting Andrew Luck, then the Colts should trade him. I know it sounds awful, but sports is a business. I am a firm believer in that. The Celtics could've traded Larry Bird, Robert Parish and/or Kevin McHale and they didn't. What did it get them? Fifteen years of crap. You need to think of what is in the best interest of your team and organization. If Peyton Manning has a problem, you need to let him go. This is the age we live in now in sports. Andrew Luck cannot be passed up on if you are the Indianapolis Colts.
