8 Michael Griffin, Tennessee Titans
7 Earl Thomas, Seattle Seahawks
6 LaRon Landry, Washington Redskins

What I've noticed about safeties is that there standing amongst the elite can fluctuate very easily. For example, Brandon Meriweather was arguably a top 10 safety in 2009 and then he fell a long way down after a shaky 2010 season. I think we could see a guy like Jarius Byrd or even Earl Thomas crack the top 5 by the end of this season because they make plays on mediocre defenses.

Top 5
5 Eric Berry, Kansas City Chiefs
4 Adrian Wilson, Arizona Cardinals
3 Nick Collins, Green Bay Packers
2 Ed Reed, Baltimore Ravens
1 Troy Polamalu, Pittsburgh Steelers

A great safety is so fun to watch. We're watching two of the games greatest of all time right now in Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu. I think we could also be watching a future all time great in Eric Berry. I think that Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu are an in a class with each other. What puts Polamalu slightly ahead of Ed Reed is that Polamalu makes plays from anywhere on the field. He is in the backfield, in the middle of the field and in center field intercepting passes. Ed Reed is a little bit of a better ball hawker in terms of taking passes back to the house, but Polamalu is a slightly better all around safety.
